Avast SecureLine VPN Review

May. 20, 2020

Avast is a name that some readers may already know. Avast was founded in the late 1980s as a cybersecurity software company and today protects more than 435 million computers worldwide. This makes Aviv the most productive antimalware application available today.

For those interested in this page of the Avast product line, you can read our review of Avast Pro. In this article, however, we will review Avast SecureLine VPN, the VPN software purchased from Avast. In our Avast SecureLine VPN test, we discovered that it offers robust speeds and security while being easy to use.

We consider it appropriate to maintain a correspondence between this antivirus industry titan and a VPN industry titan, NordVPN. If you take a look at our NordVPN test, you will find that it is one of our absolute favorites and excels in almost every category except speed.

As with our full VPN reviews, we start these matches by evaluating the features that each provider offers. We are looking for two main features: a power switch and a way to connect to the VPN automatically.

These two features have a significant impact on security, and any VPN without one or both is almost unusable. On top of that, it's nice to see features like ad blockers or split tunnels, but they only get extra VPN points and aren't considered mandatory.

At first glance, the Avast SecureLine VPN user interface appears sterile. Entering parameters only reinforces this feeling of emptiness.

The configuration consists of three tabs, each with only a few checkboxes. From the General tab, there is an option to enable or disable software notifications, a check box to determine if the client is running at startup, and the option to enable or disable beta updates.

This beta feature could compromise the stability of your VPN, as Avast himself points out. The second tab is called "Network Security" and offers some options for automatic VPN connection.

On the security side of the network, there's also the kill switch, which we disable by default. For those using SecureLine VPN, we recommend that you make sure this option is checked to maximize security. Otherwise, your VPN can go offline without you noticing, and you can still shop online or view private information without protection.

The last tab does not contain check boxes, but offers users the option to install Avast SecureLine browser extensions with a single click. While Avast covers the minimal features we mentioned, that's about all it does. No additional function goes beyond mandatory functions.
